Integrating BOM and Manufacturing

Some of the information that can be entered for BOM operations cannot be used in the Estimating, Planning and Works Orders modules.

You can set up your system to ensure compatibility between the Bill of Materials module and the Manufacturing modules, following the guidelines below.

Setting up resources

Bill of Materials uses resource values set in the BOM operation, while Estimating, Planning and Works Orders use resource values set in the cost heading.

To use Bill of Materials with Manufacturing, you must ensure that Nominal, Overhead Nominal and Overhead Recovery % values are the same on the BOM operation and in the cost heading.

You must set up cost headings, resource groups and resources. Resource groups take values from cost headings. Resources take values from the resource groups. You can amend the values for resource groups and resources. However, if you don't use the same values for the resources and the cost headings, there will be cost discrepancies when you integrate Bill of Materials with Manufacturing.

Adding operations

The Bill of Materials module is more flexible in its use of resources than the other Manufacturing modules. For example, Estimating, Planning and Works Orders modules cannot make use of unlimited resources on an operation, or use foreign currency suppliers on a subcontract operation.

To use Bill of Materials with Manufacturing, you must add resources to operations in a particular way, following these guidelines:

  • Do not use Overlap Quantity or Seconds values for the resource.
  • Enter your Setup and Runtime phases with the correct number of resource types and settings.
  • Only add one subcontract supplier.
  • Note: The supplier must use base currency (the currency normally used by the Sage 200 user's company).

  • Add no more than five Quantity Breaks for the subcontract supplier.

Turning on compatibility checking

You can select a system setting in Manufacturing System Manager to automatically give you a warning when you save a resource, operation or BOM record that contains something which is not compatible with Estimating, Planning or Works Orders modules.

For example, a subcontract supplier on a BOM operation uses a foreign currency. While foreign currency can be converted to base currency in Bill of Materials for costing, this does not happen in the other Manufacturing modules at present. Therefore a compatibility issue will be highlighted when you try to save the BOM.

Running a compatibility check

You can view and correct compatibility issues at any time by running a compatibility check from within Manufacturing System Manager.
